France’s new national hero, Leon Marchand, continued his amazing journey on Friday, 2 August, at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. He won another gold medal and set an Olympic record in the 200m individual medley, finishing in 1:54.06.

His time was just 0.06 seconds away from Ryan Lochte’s world record which has lasted for over twenty years. “I don’t know how I did that,” Marchand said after the race, still amazed.

He admitted he had not yet had time to think about his achievements. “But now I need time to think about what I just did,” he said.

Friday night’s race was Marchand’s last individual event at these Games. He won gold in every race and set a record in each one, making a big impact on Olympic history.

Marchand finishes his individual events as the Olympic champion and record holder in the men’s 400m IM, 200m breaststroke, 200m butterfly, and now the 200m IM.

In three of the four races, the 22-year-old from Toulouse beat the defending Olympic champion. Achieving all of this in front of a home crowd with the whole nation cheering for him was incredible.

There were up to 15,000 people in the audience at Paris La Defense Arena. The support was loud even before he started swimming. When he finished first, 1.25 seconds ahead of second place, the stadium exploded with cheers.

French President Emmanuel Macron was in the crowd and couldn’t hide his excitement as another gold went to the host nation.

Great Britain’s Duncan Scott won the silver medal with a time of 1:55.31, just like at Tokyo 2020. China’s champion Wang Shun took bronze in 1:56.10.

“I liked that I went head to head with [Marchand] for a bit of the race,” Scott said after winning silver.

“That guy is the best in the world in the 200m breaststroke, 200m butterfly, 400m individual medley and now the 200m [IM].

“If I’m behind him, then that’s one person who can beat me.”

Marchand is also getting praise from Michael Phelps, considered by many as the greatest athlete of all time.

“He was just really happy for me,” Marchand said about messages from Phelps.

“I saw a video of him commentating on my race, jumping around and screaming. I thought it was really funny, and I really appreciate this guy,” he said.

Marchand broke two of Phelps’ records in Paris. The first 50m of the race was close, but by the 100-metre mark, Marchand pulled ahead, leading by a full body length at the 150 mark.

Since the final lap, it was clear he would win again.

What Marchand is most proud of is his ability to stay calm. “It’s maybe my biggest pride,” he said. “The ‘me’ from five years ago, with that much pressure, it would have been complicated to manage from the first race. But I came here with a smile and felt good from start to finish. I managed the pressure without ignoring it.”

To end his individual competition in Paris, the whole arena chanted his name and waved flags, as millions watched their blue, white, and red colours raised for Marchand, yet again.
