Bengals vs Giants: Cincinnati Wins Ugly 17-7 Defensive Slugfest at the Meadowlands on Sunday Night Football

7 minutes, 31 seconds Read

Bengals vs Giants Meadowlands, New Jersey — The showdown of defensive masterpieces was on display Sunday Night Football where Cincinnati Bengals managed to edge New York Giants 17-7. The victory of the Bengals was not overwhelming yet it was dramatic and it featured the spirit of a team that has been shaped by physical defensive traits blended with excellent ground play. Offensively both the teams remained a big let-down but the Cincinnati defense came through well to pull off a close shaves victory at the Meadowlands.

This battle was not the polished affair people probably expected from a prime time about. Since both teams claimed they were focusing on getting into winning ways in Week 6 the game was expected to be a duel of some sort, but it however ended up being a match up where the defenses dominated the offenses.

The highlight of the game went to the Bengals’ defense; they only allowed the Giants to score a single touchdown. There was not a good beginning for New York’s offense. Since the beginning they could not give a good performance. The Cincinnati team took advantage of the Giants moments of folly starting with two turnovers that defined that match. Let’s take a look at some of the pivotal moments that shaped this game:

Right from the onset, the match promised to be a defensive precipitated one from where both teams would draw lots of dependence on the defensive aspect of the game. The Bengals, who were able to muster little offense in the first half, opened the scoring with a field goal. Quarterback Joe Burrow was, of course, far from his industry-leading self but still coordinated a respectable drive to set kicker Evan McPherson up for a 41-yard field goal attempt that gave Cincinnati a 3-0 lead.

The Giants were able to match this Showing some respectable defensive play throughout the first half of the game the Giants were able to slow down Burrow and the Bengals offense. But the New York offense – and particularly its quarterback, Daniel Jones – failed to make any headway.  Jones was harassed throughout the game by Cincinnati’s line especially Trey Hendrickson who brought Jones down twice in the first half.

Just under five minutes before the end of the second quarter the Bengals took the ball to the house, after cornerback Mike Hilton made an interception. This turnover placed Cincinnati nice on offense ground at the 28-yard of New York. A few plays later, Burrow linked up with Ja’Marr Chase for a short pass that was taken to the house for a 14-yard TD run and put the Bengals ahead 10-0.

In a scoreless second quarter, the Giants stirred up only in the third round. After several punts back and forth from both sides, New York mounted its only successful scoring drive of the night. The fire came from running back Saquon Barkley on a 26-yard dash, the only breakaway run Bison had the entire game.

This drive led to the score a 12-yard pass from Daniel Jones to the wide receiver Darius Slayton, which brought the score to 10-7, in favour of the Bengals. But this was the only time the Giants would find the end zone; Cincinnati’s defense stepped up its efforts and didn’t allow for a score by New York in the second half.

For the most part of the fourth quarter, the game was as evenly matched defensively as could be. Just under eight and a half minutes remaining in the game, the Bengals once again made another Giants blunder – a fumble by Daniel Jones and a recovery by Sam Hubbard in the Giants’ territory.

It did not take Burrow and the offense long to capitalize on the turnover. Cincinnati’s Joe Mixon rumbled in with a six-yard touchdown run that left the Giants at the gates as Cincinnati led 17-0.

A Tough Night for Both Offenses

The Bengals emerged victorious, albeit through a win that was hardly an offensive display of any kind. Joe Burrow managed to connect on 18 of 30 attempts for 191 yards and threw for one touchdown. The one and only target for Burrow was Ja’Marr Chase, who caught six passes for 85 yards and one touchdown. Still, in the grand scheme, the Bengals’ air assault appeared to be off following the impressive display put on by the Giants’ secondary.

The same feeling extended to Cincinnati’s rushing attack, which bore little fruit as Joe Mixon toiled for 65 yards on 21 carries. Nevertheless, the touchdown by Mixon late in the match helped in calming down the nerves of the Bengals where it was most needed.

Unlike the friendly confines of Armoury, there was no offense for the Giants as well. Daniel Jones’ regression translated into 145 yards passing, 1 touchdown, 2 turnovers. Siquon Barkley, the indomitable quarterback was replaced by a lumbering 56 yards out of 14 carries, thanks in part to winning the war at the line of scrimmage by Jamie’s defense.

Defensive Battle Defines the Game

The proceedings that took place on Sunday night were nowhere close to the usual high-scoring capsule that has come to characterize the contemporary NFL. Rather, it brought back the memories of age-old football, stereotyped with the defense doing almost everything and scoring becoming a problem.

The Bengals’ defense charged their opponents and instilled fear in the play of Daniel Jones, this was effective as it created some errors in very critical situations. Cincinnati managed to have 4 sacks and two turnovers at the end of the night, including Hilton’s interception and Hubbard’s recovered fumble which were both significant in changing the game.

For its part, the Giants’ defense was also effective, as they prevented the Bengals from scoring more than 17 points and made crucial defensive plays at important moments in the match. New York inside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux was impressive with two sacks and persistent pressure on Burrow while playing in the pocket.

In the end, however, it was the Giants’ failure to produce on offense that sealed their fate. Once again, their defense gave the offense to go out there, but the offense did not play well enough — particularly at critical junctures — and New York came up short.

Post-Game Reactions

Afterward, Taylor voiced his compliments for the defense’s effort, understanding the problems with his offense. “Coming to this place, we knew how tough it will be to claim victory, but our defense really came up large when called upon,” said Taylor. “It was not beautiful, but a win is a win, we accept it.”

Joe Burrow voiced agreement, also thanking the defense for providing their offense a chance. “That’s what good teams do. When one side of the ball is not working, the other side just works harder,” stated Burrow. “We have a lot of work to do on the offense, but I commend how we fought on.”

As for the Giants, coach Brian Daboll was clearly unhappy with the display of his team’s offensive unit but was still upbeat. “We had opportunities, but we just could not make them count,” stated Daboll. “They worked their tails off on defense, but we have to find a way to be more productive offensively.”

Who is better, the Giants or the Bengals?

As a result of the victory, the Bengals’ record improves to 4-2, and they remain in the hunt in the tough AFC North. They will want to do just that as they brace themselves to play the Seattle Seahawks next week.

The Giants, conversely, drop to 2-4 and must take the time to regroup before their Week 7 meeting with the Washington Commanders. No doubt, if the offense of New York does not improve, it will be a long season for the devotees of the Giants.

To sum up, the Bengals’ encounter with the Giants ended with a 17-7 victory for the former, and while not the most glamorous of wins, it was one characterized by excellent defensive play and crucial plays made at the right time. Their defense did most of the work for Cincinnati in this game, and the New York team has to figure out their offensive problems soon enough.
